Alternator, Starter & Car Battery Replacement Services

Alternators
Your alternator powers essential systems while your engine is running. If your lights dim or your battery drains unexpectedly, it may be time for alternator repair or replacement. Our expert team will test your alternator and get you back on the road safely.

Batteries
Your car battery powers everything from the ignition to headlights. If you're jump-starting regularly or seeing a dashboard warning light, it's time to consider a car battery replacement. Our team offers fast battery testing, replacement, charging, and recycling services in Waldorf. Not sure how often to replace a car battery? Most drivers should check their battery after 3 years and consider replacing by year 5-especially in extreme climates or with frequent short trips.

Starters
The starter gets your engine going. Clicking sounds or a failure to start can signal a faulty starter motor. We'll diagnose starter issues and repair or replace the component as needed to ensure reliable starts every time.

Battery FAQs

What are common mistakes when jumping a car?

The most common mistake is reversing the jumper cable connections. Always connect red to positive and black to negative. Using low-quality cables, allowing the clips to touch, or attempting to jump-start a battery with visible damage can cause serious electrical damage. When in doubt, have McGhees Auto Service perform the jump safely.

What should I be careful of when replacing a car battery?

When replacing a car battery, avoid touching both terminals with the same tool, as this can create a dangerous short circuit. Never drop the battery, and do not reconnect the cables until the battery is securely mounted. If you're unsure about the process, let our technicians handle your battery replacement professionally.

Car Starting FAQs

How do I unlock a locked steering wheel?

Press the brake pedal and gently turn the steering wheel in the direction it moves slightly while turning the key. This relieves pressure in the steering column and allows the wheel to unlock. Never force the wheel or key. If the battery is dead or the key will not turn, consult a professional technician.

What does a failing starter sound like?

Common signs of a failing starter include a single clicking sound, grinding noises, or complete silence when turning the key. These symptoms often indicate a starter problem that should be inspected and serviced as soon as possible.

Testimonials

, 10/04/2021
Mr. Mcghee and staff were very cordial and responsive to all of my inquiries. I inquired about a MD State Inspection for my used SUV and he answered all of my questions respectfully and in detail. He mentioned that vehicles were serviced on a First come, First serve basis depending on how soon I could get my vehicle to their Waldorf location. The service men were cordial and asked if we had any further questions and provided us with a time frame for servicing our vehicle and called as stated when the SUV was ready. I was pleased with the service provided and the attentiveness to our vehicle needs; they even told a few jokes while we waited and provided information about what businesses were around that we could kill time in while we waited for our SUV to be inspected. Would refer this shop to others and may be back for other services necessary for the upkeep of my vehicle. Thank you.
